NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY AND BIOSAFETY CENTER

National Biodiversity and Biosafety Center (NBBC) - established under the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan #392 dated 1.09.03.

The head of the Center is National CBD Focal Point Mr.Neimatullo Safarov, candidate of biological science, the deserved person of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Main goal of NBBC - coordination of activities on implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan within the framework of UN Convention on Biological Diversity, and other tasks in the field of ecology, nature protection and sustainable development.

NBBC implements its activity together with State Committee for Environment Protection and Forestry of the Republic of Tajikistan, State Land use Committee of the Republic of Tajikistan, Academy of Science of the Republic of Tajikistan, ministries, authorities, agencies and other nature protection bodies.

NBBC works in close cooperation with CBD Secretariat, UNDP, World Bank, UNEP, WWF, IUCN, GEF, European Commission, and other international organizations.

NBBC possesses good modern technical equipment, constant access to Internet resources, modern library and database, including photos.

TASK OF THE NATIONAL CENTER

  • coordination of activities on implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan;

  • creation of information database, data bank on diversity of the flora, fauna, ecosystems;

  • coordination of activities on creation of mechanisms on sustainable conservation and use of biodiversity;

  • development and implementation of international projects on biodiversity conservation in cooperation with international organizations;

  • coordination of activities on creation of ecological network of the country;

  • public involvement in the issues of biodiversity conservation.

  • prepared basis for creation of GIS on ecology and nature protection;

  • created Protected Areas econet structure in GIS-format;

  • developed recommendations on sustainable and safe use of biological resources;

  • conducted workshops at the national and regional levels on the issues of biodiversity conservation;

  • developed indicators of biodiversity for assessment of achievements of Millennium Development Goals;

  • developed and are being developed economic justifications of projects and programs;

  • prepared and published various publications on environment protection;

  • the Center participated in development of the National Environment Action Plan.
